Ep 70: Perfectionism and Its Roots

My favorite childhood game was a game called Perfection. The object of the game was to fit all the little geometric pieces in their proper place before time runs out. If you didn’t, the whole game exploded and the pieces flew everywhere. For those of us who struggle with Perfectionism, this is how we feel every day—pressured to get everything in place just so or the whole thing explodes in our face. If you are a perfectionist or you love someone who is, this episode is for you.
In this episode,
- we discuss why Perfectionism flies in the face of everything we know about balance
- we define Perfectionism
- we talk about ways you can know if you’re a perfectionist
- We describe different types of Perfectionists
- self-oriented
- others-oriented
- socially prescribed
- We describe how Perfectionists reveal themselves
The Roots:
- God-given temperament
- Product of a critical parent
- Product of a legalistic church
- Fear
- Pride
